Abstract: First, Victor Miller will describe the historical context, especially the invention of public-key cryptography in the 1970s, that set the stage for the development of Elliptic Curve Cryptography. Then Neal Koblitz will speak about dangers from the misuse of mathematics to give false assurances that a cryptosystem is secure.
