In Memoriam Prof. h. c. mult. Dr. Dr. h.c. Dr. Rolf Gartz

The Eduard Rhein Foundation mourns the loss of its long-time Executive Board Member, Prof. Dr. Rolf Gartz, who passed away on March 22, 2025, at the age of 85. For over 25 years, from January 1990 to December 2015, Prof. Dr. Gartz led the Foundation with exceptional dedication, professional expertise, and great personal commitment. Personally chosen by Eduard Rhein as his successor, he played a key role in the Foundation’s development and successful positioning. Under his leadership, outstanding individuals in the fields of science, technology, and culture were honored and supported. Thanks to his efforts, the Foundation gained recognition far beyond the borders of Germany.

He studied physics, chemistry, and biology at the universities of Bonn and Cologne. Rolf Gartz earned his doctorate (Dr. rer. nat.) in cell biology and biochemistry in 1969. His research often focused on understanding cellular mechanisms and interactions at the biochemical level, contributing to our knowledge of how cells function and communicate. Prof. Gartz was particularly involved in several research projects exploring how cells respond to external stimuli and convert them into biochemical signals. These signals can be transmitted into the cell’s interior and trigger specific effects. He was the author and co-author of numerous publications that contributed to both theoretical and applied aspects of biochemistry.

For his achievements, Prof. Dr. Gartz received numerous honors, including the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon and later the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class. He also volunteered on the board of the German Technion Society and was a member of numerous renowned scientific societies, including the Max Planck Society and the Society of German Natural Scientists and Physicians.

With the passing of Prof. Dr. Rolf Gartz, the Eduard Rhein Foundation loses a person of extraordinary stature and great human warmth. We are deeply grateful for his tireless dedication and will honor his memory.
